Virtually every organization places a strong emphasis on behaving with integrity and acting ethically. Many organizations address the problem of maintaining ethical standards by adopting formal codes of ethical conduct. These codes, while not exhaustive, help define what is and what is not ethical behavior in a particular company. Other firms stress the importance of ethical behavior through their culture by adopting values and norms that promote ethical activity.

Regardless of the method used, it is important that organizations promote ethical conduct because ethical dilemmas occur frequently in organizational life. There is an ethical component to how decisions are made, how employees treat each other, and how responsibilities to shareholders and customers are met. A strong ethical climate is also important for building trust among employees.

It is very difficult, perhaps even impossible, to formulate an ethical code that gives clear guidance in all situations. In fact, ethical dilemmas occur precisely when the situation in question is not clear cut, and often involve unanticipated events. In the Introductory Video, Andrew faces such a situation. As you watch, ask yourself what you would do in his position. Is Andrew's obligation to CanGo more important than protecting the confidentiality of a co-worker? What standards would you use to resolve his problem?
